Salo Italy, the town and its Republic
The proper name of Salo Italy, is with an accent at the end, Salò is one of the most important and popular towns on the west side of Lake Garda. Salò is located at the end of a nice narrow bay, protected from heights covered with florid vegetation.

The towns origins are not sure, but it was already appointed during the roman times as "Sa-lo-dium". In the year 1337 it became chief town of Lake Garda's west side and center of the local council.Later, until sec. XVIII, Salò was faithful to "Serenissima" (Venice Republic), against french invaders.

During the second World War Salò was headquarter of some fascist ministries because of its strategic position, in october of 1943 here was founded the "Italian Social Repubblic", called also "Repubblic of Salò", and Mussolini was staying in Gargnano at "Villa Feltrinelli". In April of 1945, Mussolini went to Milan and then he tried to escape to Switzerland but it was caught and executed on Lake Como from partisan troops on April the 28th 1945. The following day its body and that one of its lover Claretta Petacci were hung from the feet in a square of Milan.
